Celebrating multilingualism

A core pillar of learning at rowntree montessori schools!

This year, Rowntree Montessori Schools proudly introduced our Five Learning Pillars, a framework that guides both learning and community life across our campuses. These pillars reflect who we are, what we value, and how we prepare students not only for academic success, but for life beyond the classroom. One pillar we are especially proud to celebrate is Multilingualism.

At Rowntree, multilingualism is not just a skill; it is a strength, a resource, and a core value woven into the fabric of our school community. Our students come from richly diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and we see this diversity as an incredible asset. By honouring and embracing the languages our students speak at home and within their communities, we create an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered.

Research consistently shows that multilingualism supports cognitive development, strengthens problem-solving skills, and enhances communication and empathy. At Rowntree, we witness these benefits firsthand. When students are encouraged to maintain and share their home languages while developing strong English language skills, they grow in confidence and self-awareness. They learn that their language is an important part of who they are and that every voice matters.

Multilingualism also plays a powerful role in building respect, inclusivity, and global awareness. Through classroom activities, collaborative learning, music, storytelling, and cultural experiences, students are exposed to a wide range of languages and traditions. They learn to appreciate similarities and differences, developing curiosity about the world and respect for perspectives beyond their own. These experiences help nurture open-minded learners who are prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our educators intentionally create opportunities for students to explore linguistic diversity in meaningful ways. Whether through shared cultural celebrations, multilingual greetings, songs, or discussions about language and identity, students are encouraged to celebrate both their own heritage and that of their peers. This fosters a strong sense of belonging and community, one where diversity is not simply acknowledged but truly celebrated.

We are deeply grateful to our families for partnering with us in this journey. Your support, engagement, and willingness to share your cultures and languages enrich our classrooms and strengthen our community. Together, we are teaching our students that multilingualism is a gift, one that builds confidence, compassion, and connection.

At Rowntree Montessori Schools, we believe that embracing multilingualism today helps shape thoughtful, confident, and globally-minded individuals for tomorrow. It is one of the many ways we educate the whole child and prepare our students to succeed not only academically, but as respectful, capable citizens of the world.
