Discovering worlds through words

Throughout the Kindergarten years, children are introduced to letter sounds, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, printing and early reading strategies. As they progress, they begin to blend sounds, read simple texts, and express their ideas through drawing and writing, building both skill and confidence along the way.

Students engage in meaningful bookwork alongside the use of authentic Montessori materials. This approach allows them to develop strong literacy skills while also benefiting from tactile, interactive experiences that deepen their understanding.

To further enrich learning, learners participate in storytelling workshops, author studies, and engaging field trips that connect classroom learning to the real world.

Science & Social Studies

Understanding the world

Our youngest learners become curious little investigators of the world around them. Using Montessori materials such as globes, maps and water and landform cards, they explore countries, cultures and physical features of the Earth in concrete, visual ways. Through simple, engaging experiments, students observe what happens, make inferences and draw their own conclusions.

Hands-on lessons invite them to describe natural events, ask questions and connect social and scientific concepts to real life, helping them see how their world works and how they fit within it.

Practical Life Sensorial Language Math Culture

Practical Life

Practical Life exercises help children develop mental and physical self-control while fostering independence. They practice tasks like preparing snacks, tying, pouring and caring for themselves, others and their environment.

This type of learning supports their natural desire for order and responsibility.

Sensorial

An extensive number of sensorial materials help to enhance the child’s understanding of their physical environment through the manipulation of materials which isolate certain aspects of that environment, such as colour, sound, taste, smell, touch and spatial relationships.

Language

Language development begins at birth as children absorb spoken words. During Montessori lessons, Sandpaper Letters help them connect sounds to letters through sight and touch, while reading and writing emerge naturally from their experiences.

Math

The use of manipulative materials enables the child to internalize concepts of numbers, symbols, sequence, operations and memorization of basic facts.

These hands-on experiences help students develop a deep, intuitive understanding of mathematical thinking and problem-solving.

Culture

Children are introduced to the basics of geography, history, life sciences, earth sciences, music, art and movement. Through exploration and creative expression, they gain a broader awareness of the world and an appreciation for its diversity.

Enrolling our son at Rowntree Montessori has been the best decision we made for our son’s educational foundation. The small class size and personal connection the teachers make with the students was important to us.
