Discovering worlds through words
Throughout the Kindergarten years, children are introduced to letter sounds, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, printing and early reading strategies. As they progress, they begin to blend sounds, read simple texts, and express their ideas through drawing and writing, building both skill and confidence along the way.
Students engage in meaningful bookwork alongside the use of authentic Montessori materials. This approach allows them to develop strong literacy skills while also benefiting from tactile, interactive experiences that deepen their understanding.
To further enrich learning, learners participate in storytelling workshops, author studies, and engaging field trips that connect classroom learning to the real world.
Developing logical reasoning
Students explore number sense, counting, patterns, measurement and spatial awareness. They engage in meaningful math units that progress from recognizing and representing numbers to exploring simple addition and subtraction, identifying patterns, comparing quantities and understanding shapes and space.
Learners enjoy structured bookwork with the use of authentic Montessori materials that bring abstract concepts to life, developing both independence and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Our program is further enhanced through field trips and workshops that connect math to real-world applications.
Ensuring physical and mental wellbeing
Students participate in a variety of activities that promote active living, including games, basic sports skills, movement exploration and healthy living habits. They build physical abilities through units that support gross motor development, spatial awareness and cooperation with peers. Activities are designed to be both purposeful and enjoyable, helping students develop a positive relationship with physical activity from an early age.
The program is enriched through school-wide events, active play opportunities, and movement-based activities that encourage participation and teamwork. Field trips and workshops related to physical activity and wellness further enhance learning, allowing students to experience movement in real-world contexts.
Learning through experimentation
Students explore the five senses, living and non-living things, weather and seasons, and simple environmental concepts. Learning is enriched through monthly STEAM challenges and dedicated activity days, and hands-on workshops and field trips, where children are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, solve problems, and collaborate with peers.
Students also participate in special activities like Earth Day celebrations, fostering early environmental awareness and responsibility. By combining structured bookwork with Montessori materials, our program ensures that students develop both practical skills and conceptual understanding.
Understanding the world around us
Learners discover the value of community, family, traditions and roles and responsibilities, building foundational skills in empathy, cooperation and civic awareness. Learning is enriched through visits from community helpers such as Peel Regional Police and interactive workshops that introduce students to the roles people play in keeping communities safe and connected.
Our program celebrates diversity and cultural awareness through initiatives like Black History Month, with author visits and storytelling, as well as cultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year and Diwali dress-up days and more, giving students meaningful opportunities to explore traditions from around the world.
Freeing the inner self

Dynamic math programs are integrated into our curriculum, boosting student confidence, reinforcing key skills and making practice engaging and fun.

Practical Life
Practical Life exercises help children develop mental and physical self-control while fostering independence. They practice tasks like preparing snacks, tying, pouring and caring for themselves, others and their environment.
This type of learning supports their natural desire for order and responsibility.
Sensorial
An extensive number of sensorial materials help to enhance the child’s understanding of their physical environment through the manipulation of materials which isolate certain aspects of that environment, such as colour, sound, taste, smell, touch and spatial relationships.
Language
Language development begins at birth as children absorb spoken words. During Montessori lessons, Sandpaper Letters help them connect sounds to letters through sight and touch, while reading and writing emerge naturally from their experiences.
Math
The use of manipulative materials enables the child to internalize concepts of numbers, symbols, sequence, operations and memorization of basic facts.
These hands-on experiences help students develop a deep, intuitive understanding of mathematical thinking and problem-solving.
Culture
Children are introduced to the basics of geography, history, life sciences, earth sciences, music, art and movement. Through exploration and creative expression, they gain a broader awareness of the world and an appreciation for its diversity.
Enrolling our son at Rowntree Montessori has been the best decision we made for our son’s educational foundation. The small class size and personal connection the teachers make with the students was important to us.
